Amsterdam may be known for other things… but one of the best parts about a weekend in Amsterdam is having the chance to eat a slice of the most amazing apple pie ever!

I have honestly tried a lot of apple pie because I love it so much, from all over the world from South Carolina to London and this is by far my favorite, BY FAR!

Winkel 43 is on the outer canals but is walking distance from the center of Dam Square. I highly recommend walking because it is just too pretty to miss.

THE EXPERIENCE

The place was packed when I walked and from what I was told by the locals, that is normal. The cafe features huge ovens where the pie is made and baked in the store so you know it’s fresh.

I was standing in the line for about five minutes and saw three different pies come out and sold on the spot so their turnover is incredible. People were walking out with a slice or the whole thing!

I took a slice away (because there was literally nowhere to move let alone sit, it was 11 am on Sunday morning).

One of the coolest parts is they spoke to me in Dutch which made me feel like I was really in the heart of the city and away from the tourist center. In all other cafes and restaurants in Amsterdam, waiters just automatically spoke English so it was nice to try out my terrible Dutch!

THE PIE

Unlike your traditional crust on the outside, filling on the inside apple pie, this dutch delicacy layers the pie with juicy spiced locally grown apples has and an almost cake textured pastry. It is amazing because it rises just enough to have a delicious and just undercooked texture on the inside soaking in all those amazing apple flavors and manages to get crusty enough on the outside so there is a little crunch when you bite in.  This cake literally melts in your mouth. It is so buttery, spicy, gooey and perfect that I was so lucky I had walked away before I started eating it otherwise I would have eaten the entire shop.

They packed my amazing piece of cake along with a very generous scoop of thick buttery cream which was paired perfectly with the pie.

I am honestly salivating just writing about this. So please, please if you go to Amsterdam, do yourself a favor and get to Winkel 43. It is well worth it.
